Here is my story. I want to say that I'm normal, but something is going on, and the doctor is telling me I am normal. There is a question in my recent labs that he is passing on to another dr. but I won't hear from that dr. for another 1 1/2 weeks because he is on vacation.
So, I thought I would give all the gory details and see if anyone has any idea's. I was diagnosed with diabetis 4 years ago. Took meds for 3 months and was able to control my levels with a diet change. I weighed 319 lbs (5'9") oops, I'm also a female, 35 years old. I have high blood pressure, but it's controlled on a low dose of zestril and a low dose of hctz. I'm down to 270 lbs, but haven't lost anything in the last year, even though my diet hasn't changed. I stay away from carbs, and basically eat from scratch. Nothing out of a box or package. The dr. says I am a healthy fat person! and not to change my diet.
I went back to the doctor last month because I've noticed the top of my hair was getting thin. I've always had very thick coarse hair, down to my waist. I panicked and thought maybe my hair was too heavy and cut it myself at shoulder level. The doctor looked at my scalp and didn't see any hair growth, or any breakage. He ran a few test, but said that it is probable heriditary. I'm adopted, so I don't know but if I look at my kids hair they have full thick hair too.
Here are my lab results. He check for thyroid and they are TSH (reflex t4F) 1.9, low is suppose to be 0.28 high is 5.00
HbA1c was 5.4 in non diabetic levels
iron RLB Ferritin was 10, normal levels are 10-291
Zinc level was normal, and I can't find my paper to get the reading on that one.
In a last ditch attempt he said let's check your testosterone levels. He said this is a long shot because I am neither hairy, have a deep voice, or have acne. My periods are always 28 days apart, I have four kids.
Those levels are testosterone total 40, with 15-70 being normal
Testosterone free was 8.4, with normal between 1.0-8.5
Testosterone %free #bound was high at 2.1, normal being 0.5-1.8
Bound testosterone was 39.16, normal being less than 63.98
My red blood count was high 5.10, normal is 3.75-5.00
White blood count was high at 11.9, normal is 4.0-10.5
All he said is that the white blood count could be high because I was fighting a cold. A few days later I had the sniffles for a day, and that was probable the reason. He didn't comment on the red blood count, and didn't know about the testosterone normals and high.
Could the testosterone cause this thinning of my hair? How do they fix the levels? Will my hair grow back? The hair loss is really playing a trick on my self esteem!
Oh yeah, my tubes are tied after my last baby, does that play a role in your hormone levels?
I do smoke ( I know I know, no lectures ok?)
Thanks for any help, I'm not even sure if this is the right group to post this too.
